Despite being called a prequel, Wicked is not really part of the Oz books canon.

I'm sorry guys, but seriously
Wicked and The Wizard of Oz are not the same story.

I am few of who likes Elphaba and Dorothy? For your information Wicked and The Wizard of Oz are NOT the same story.
The Wizard of Oz was WAY before Wicked and Wicked was originally a revicionist novel for adults.

The musical is just the novel toned down (like is been Disneyfied) and they made it changes for example Fiyero WAS not the Scarecrow, in the orignal novel he was married unhappily to a woman named Sarima had three children and he and Elpahba made an affair and the Wizard's secret police bruttaly murdered Fiyero.

Heck the original book of The Wizard of Oz was more darker than the movie (the tin man said he chopped the heads of birds and the Wizard really sent Dorothy and the gang to kill the Witch!).

Oh something else, don't blame Dorothy for the death of Nessarose, in the musical it was Madame Morrible who created the tornado to lure out Elphaba, so instead of blaming Dorothy, blame Madame Morrible for Nessa's death.

Despite that, I still like the songs and the 1939 movie but seriously, stop comparing them together.

Wicked-Gregory Maguire
The Wizard of Oz-L. Frank Baum

My favourite interpretation of the OZ novels is 'Return to Oz'

And about the whole you have to hate the hero if you love the villian thing is BS.

I'm one of the biggest Randall Boggs fans and yet I really love Mike and Sulley. And when people start accusing me of being a villian lover for liking characters like Randall, Hexadecimal from Reboot and the Phantom of the Opera, let me state this:
- in the Alice books, I love Alice. In the Oz books, I love Dorothy.
In Peter Pan, I like Peter. In rise of the gaurdians, I like Sandy And the list goes on.

So I like Heros and villians.

I don't mind Wicked.  I just hate how some people are trying to merge Elpahba with the Wicked Witch of the West from the 1939 film.  They are completely different people, the latter's real name was Almira Gulch and she was Dorothy's neighbor who was created as a nightmare version in her dream.  Completely different from Elpahba who already lived in Oz, had a separate personality, look, and history.
Plus, can you IMAGINE the Wicked Witch of the West from the film turning evil because she was the Wizard's jilted lover and also had an affair with SCARECROW?!   No...that is not the same witch from Wicked.  (besides, Scarecrow from the 1939 movie was Dorothy's farmhand.  him & Fiyero are different too)
I just prefer the evil witch from 1939.  She scared me and is more iconic.  The one from Wicked is ok, but the sexiness and "hey, she's not REALLY evil!" only makes me roll my eyes.

Glad to find someone who likes both Elpheba and Dorothy! I figured that they're not connected to each other in a canon way. There were some things that don't connect between the two musicals from major things (such as the Wicked Witch's personality (Evil in one musical, good but misunderstood in the other) to small things (Glinda's pink dress in one version and Glinda wearing blue in other).

Funny thing is, yesterday I was talking about 'Wicked' the musical, and right in the middle of me talking, this girl just butts in by randomly talking about the wizard of oz movie. I told her, THERE NOT THE SAME!!

I thought everyone knew this. They're two different canons. Wicked is a mix of the book-verse and movie-verse into its own verse.

A-freaking-men!

I like Wicked and all, but I just can't accept it as canon. There are too many inconsistencies and plotholes in it for it to match up with the original source material and the sad thing is that it is accepted as canon. I just see Wicked as a decent fanfiction that has a profit behind it, in all honesty. Just wondering, have you read the original books?

I've read the first one and am working on the second one, and so far I would recommend it. It's a pretty easy read and it's just brilliant, however it's sad that there aren't that many people that know about the series...

probably because their are overshadowed by the 1939 musical version

Yeah that's probably the biggest reason why. While it is a good movie, it really takes artistic liberties from the book but I really don't kind with some of the changes. Heck, if they crammed the whole book in detail-for-detail, it would probably be a two and a half hour long movie. Or something like that. Point is it would be very long. :b

I cannot thank you enough for this stamp. It’s SO good to know I’m not the only one out there. I’m a HUGE Oz fan. Have been ever since I was a kid. I love the original books so much. BUT... every time I try to carry on a conversation with someone about them, they always think of Wicked. Some people actually believe it’s the official Wizard of Oz. And it is so unbelievably annoying. I try to explain to them about the original books, but apparently no one nowadays knows they even exist. It’s just sad.

You can cram them together and MAKE them fit, but I agree, they have some inconsistencies. Wicked is a great spin-off though! :D

Very true.
I hate when people try and reconcile the two, it cannot be done.
Wicked is an entirely different (and not as good imo) universe.

They're alternate universes. The Oz movies, musical, and Wicked book are AU from each other.

I thought it was obvious..

After reading the adaption of the second Oz novel, I can see why readers were upset at the idea of Oz actually usurping the legitimate heir to the throne. Didn't seem to be in his personality that was established in the first book at all. And I can see why later books quietly buried this. I normally believe an author should rise above what his readers WANT, but in this case, it was a smart move.
